Frequently Asked Questions And Answers

Do I need to list any other Guarantees for nutrients?

Only if you would need to support claims made on your label, such as high in calcium.

Do I need to send a sample of my product to you for analysis?

In most cases it isn’t necessary to send us a sample.   Most pet foods can be analyzed using database software and your recipe. An RL Food consultant will be able to determine if you need to send a sample for proximate analysis or simply complete the recipe template for database analysis.

I purchase my ingredients in bulk and they don’t have ingredient statements or nutrition fact labels on the package. Where can I get this information?

You can either call the manufacturer or go to their website online, many times this information is provided on their website.

What are the minimum requirements for listing the Guaranteed Analysis?

Minimum percent of crude protein and crude fat, and the maximum percent of crude fiber and moisture are the only required nutrients.

What are the pet food label requirements from the AAFCO?

There are eight requirements for pet food labeling by the AAFCO. They are:
  1. Brand and Product Name
  2. Name of Species for which the pet food is intended
  3. Quantity Statement
  4. Guaranteed Analysis
  5. Ingredient Statement
  6. Nutritional Adequacy Statement
  7. Feeding Directions
  8. Name and address of manufacturer or distributor
For more information, please go to the AAFCO’s website.

What does ‘Crude’ refer to?

Crude refers to the analysis method, not the quality of the nutrient.

What is a sub-ingredient and why do I need to include this information?

A sub-ingredient is an ingredient that is part of the final ingredient. For example the sub-ingredients of Enriched Unbleached Wheat Flour are: Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Reduced Iron, Thiamin Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Folic Acid
This information is required by the AAFCO to be displayed on your product.
